Arches master papermakers have been producing very high-quality fine art papers since 1492, and today Arches is the only paper mill in France using a traditional cylinder mould process for all its papers. Quality is close to that of paper made by craft methods. The slow turning of the cylinder enables the fibres to be deposited evenly and spread in all directions over the wire. The paper is therefore more homogeneous and has good dimensional stability.
As a result of working closely with the artistic community, Arches understands that creative control is paramount for any artist and selecting the best paper to produce an original piece of art is a crucial starting point in the process.
Taking the creative process one step further and recognising the need for artists to have papers that would allow them to faithfully reproduce their artwork as limited edition prints, Arches recently introduced a range of digital fine art papers. The portfolio features an innovative coating developed by the Arches research and development centres and includes Arches 88, BFK Rives Pure White and BFK Rives White and Arches Aquarelle Rag - all papers which are synonymous with the traditional fine art papers and techniques used by artists for many centuries.
The ink receiver layer, an innovative technology developed by Arches specifically for this range, allows the printing of images with an exceptional colour space, excellent contrasts and a high level of brightness. Of the four different paper types, three (Arches 88, Arches Aquarelle Rag and Arches BFK Rives Pure White) are the whitest on the market not to contain any optical brighteners.
